DESCRIPTION
The online M.Ed. in Middle Grades Math and Science offers in-service teachers the opportunity to add areas of concentration to their teaching certificates in highly sought-after teaching fields. The degree is awarded through the NCATE accredited Dewar College of Education at Valdosta State University. All course-work, including exams, is done online. Top graduate faculty from Valdosta State University and North Georgia College and State University teach the courses. This 12-course online M.Ed. program can be completed in four consecutive semesters – about 16 months - with a full-time enrollment. Courses are offered on a continuous basis allowing for part-time enrollment. No campus visits are required to complete the program.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT ISSUES
Students enrolled in the program will use the online courses to conduct all work, including team functions, exams, discussion posts, and case studies. Students also have access to academic resources, such as an online library. Courses are asynchronous. No face-to-face or group online meetings are required. Students may participate in IP videoconferencing/ audioconferencing for instruction or field experience supervision. The courses combine text materials, case studies, online team projects and assignments, as well as discussions and written project work. Grades may be based primarily on reports, exams, assigned case studies, and participation in course and team activities.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have basic computer skills and access to a viable computer to take the online classes. Students must register for a campus specific portfolio assessment software. Students may participate in IP videoconferencing/ audioconferencing for instruction or field experience supervision. Students may be required to purchase a webcam and/or headset in order to participate. Additional course specific software may be required.
ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES
This program is delivered through a course management system that provides built in content and communication tools. Students have frequent contact with the professor and fellow students through the online courses - through discussion boards, e-mail, and presentation areas. Each professor sets expectations on timing and frequency of interaction. Faculty guide all stages of course work and interact often with students. In-service teachers seeking additional professional development find this form of anytime, anywhere interaction to be essential to their needs for flexible learning. ACCESS TO FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES
A financial aid application and financial statement may be submitted at any time after the applicant has applied for admission. Financial aid applications are accepted as long as resources permit. Applicants may be eligible for aid from an extensive list of grants, federal programs, loans, work, or scholarships. Participants in the online the M.Ed. program in Middle Grades Math and Science may be eligible for Hope Scholarship assistance. Other aid may be available.
