DESCRIPTION
The online M.A. in Teaching: Special Education-General Curriculum is designed to prepare candidates to teach PK-12 grade students who are being served in a general curriculum program. Courses include a focus on co-teaching and access to the general education curriculum. Successful completion of this M.A.T. program will result in recommendation for initial certification in Special Education General Curriculum in the State of Georgia and a Master of Arts degree from Valdosta State University. Courses for this program are offered in collaboration with North Georgia College and State University. The program will focus on preparing candidates with the knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based interventions that have a positive impact on the PK-12 learner. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate competence in assessment, teaching, and the ability to implement and evaluate specific teaching strategies. The program is aligned with NCATE and CEC( Council for Exceptional Children) Standards.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT ISSUES
Students enrolled in the program will use the online courses to conduct all work, including team functions, exams, discussion posts, and case studies. Students also have access to academic resources, such as an online library. Courses are asynchronous. No face-to-face or group online meetings are required. Students may participate in IP videoconferencing/ audioconferencing for instruction or field experience supervision. The courses combine text materials, case studies, online team projects and assignments, as well as discussions and written project work. Grades may be based primarily on reports, exams, assigned case studies, and participation in course and team activities.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have basic computer skills and access to a viable computer to take the online classes ( See Minimum Recommended Hardware). Students must register for LiveText portfolio assessment software. Students may participate in IP videoconferencing/ audioconferencing for instruction or field experience supervision. Students may be required to purchase a webcam and/or headset in order to participate. Additional course specific software may be required.
ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES
This program is delivered through a course management system that provides built in content and communication tools. Valdosta State University provides free technical support for online learners through the IT Helpdesk or by phone at 229-245-4357. At the VSU Online Bookstore (Toll Free: 1-800-618-1878 Select 7), students may order textbooks and purchase other items online. All students have access to the Odum Library and to GALILEO, a web-based world class virtual library with extensive online database access and full text e-documents. Students outside the institution's home county may request books and journal articles through the Document Delivery Services. Students may access the reference desk by phone 229-333-7149 or reach the main number for the library at 229-333-5869. ACCESS TO FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES
A financial aid application and financial statement may be submitted at any time after the applicant has applied for admission. Financial aid applications are accepted as long as resources permit, and priority is given to those submitted by May 1.
